Leadership News

Each year, we join Catholic Education South Australia to highlight the contribution that Catholic schools make in educating young thriving people. Last week as a whole school, we participated in various activities for Catholic Education Week such as lunch time pop-up prayer, liturgical singing, contemplative prayer, whole school nude food picnic, parent prayer and switch off hour.

As part of Catholic Education Week, we also hosted an Open Morning which again was well attended by many potential families. Our eight Year 6 students who were tour guides on the day are to be commended for their professionalism when conducting tours for our visitors.

SACPSSA (Catholic Schools) Athletics Carnival

The SACPSSA (Catholic Schools) Athletics Carnival was held on Tuesday this week. Students participated eagerly in running, jumping and shot put events.  St Martin’s fielded 47 athletes at SA Athletics Stadium event. The team, for the first time, included students from Year 3. For many of them, this was their first carnival representing St Martins.

Well done to all on your eager participation. Special mention to:

The shot putters, Christie, Eva, Tim Adit, Ajak, Kaysii and Rocco for stand out performances on the day.

Congratulations Kaysii on winning the Year 5 Girl’s Age-Group Champion with your efforts in sprinting and long jump.

Thank you Mr Dylan George for your continued support of the Athletics Team at St Martin’s.

Pastoral Care Worker – Helen Young

My Pastoral Care Worker role involves pastoral support for students, staff and parents.  I am also the Curriculum Coordinator at St Martin’s.  I am available for students, parents and teachers to come and have a chat knowing that everything is confidential.  I can offer strategies and advice on issues or refer you onto other agencies that can support you or your child, as you or your child’s journey through life can at times face some tough challenges.  We have a school counsellor who I or other staff can refer students onto as well.

In my role I am also an accredited facilitator for Seasons for Growth – a grief and loss educational program for students.  We have found this program to be very successful for students who have experienced separation, divorce, death or family or friends illness.  I also work with Rose and Mel in running the Soup Group where Year 6 students cook soup for Moore Street/ Adelaide Day Centre who feed the homeless.  We teach the students about the importance of giving back to others who are less fortunate than ourselves.  The students feel like they are making a difference to others lives.

I work on a Friday but I can be contacted via my school email or a message can be left at the Front Office.  My hours are flexible so I can address issues during the school week.  (hyoung@smg.catholic.edu.au)

Wellbeing for all is important to us here at St Martin’s and I am delighted to be a part of the team.
