Second Week of Lent
(School week beginning 9th March)

In Cambodia, 1 in 8 people live below the poverty line.  This week through Project Compassion, we learn about Phany (pronounded Parn-ee).  Struggling to earn a living as a farmer in Cambodia, Phany was forced to leave her daughter behind in the village to take up construction work in the city.  Thankfully, through a Caritas funded program, Phany learnt new farming techniques which enabled her to get a better yield from her vegetable crops and to conserve water in her drought-stricken region.  Phany’s community also took part in training in health, nutrition, hygiene and disaster preparedness, arming them with better strategies to cope with environmental changes.  Let’s Go Further, Together! Please support the Project Compassion: lent.caritas.org.au.

Sport News

St Martin’s Swimming Squad Training Sessions have finished for 2020. These sessions were attended by around a dozen eager Year 3-6 students and culminated in the St Martin’s Swimming Trials that were held last week. The trials were run to help finalise the swimming roster for the Catholic Schools Carnival that was held on Tuesday (10.3.2020). Congratulations and well done to all who participated in the Carnival.

The Catholic School’s Swimming Carnival was a huge success! Our small team were very competitive with all swimmers receiving at least one place ribbon for their races. The relay teams all finished third and St Martin’s finished the day in third position. Special mention to Connor (Year 6) who won Age Group Champion for his three first place finishes.

Leadership

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The March long weekend is always a good way for our students to refresh after a busy start back to school. I hope you all enjoyed some down time with your children.

Last Friday, the whole staff attended a conference with other Catholic schools from our region. Student Agency was the focus for the first half of the day. The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) in a recent paper; ‘OECD Future of Education and Skills 2030 Conceptual Learning Framework’, defines student agency as,

‘…Students have the ability and the will to positively influence their own lives and the world around them…the capacity to set a goal, reflect and act responsibly to effect change.’
